Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Gears Up for Annual St. Sava Celebration

CHICAGO, IL – January 12, 2024 – The Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral is thrilled to announce the upcoming St. Sava Celebration scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2024. This annual event is a cherished tradition within our Cathedral community, bringing together all groups in a joyous celebration.

St. Sava, a revered Serbian saint, born in 1173, holds a special place in the hearts of the Serbian Orthodox community. Leaving the comforts of his father’s royal home, he embarked on a spiritual journey, eventually becoming a monk and establishing the renowned Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos. In 1219, St. Sava was appointed the first archbishop of the newly organized autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church. His contributions to the spiritual enlightenment of the Serbian people led to his canonization, and he remains a beloved figure to this day.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

Divine Liturgy

  • Time: 10:00 AM
  • Followed by the Blessing of the Slava Kolac with all children

St. Sava Program

  • Time: 1:30 PM
  • Featuring: Youth from Church School, Serbian School, Jr. Brankies “Brankici”, Drama Club, and SOKO Folklore Groups

Music Entertainment by Neso Castello

  • Immediately following the program

The kitchen will be open from 12:00 NOON to 1:30 PM and after the program, serving delectable Serbian Grille Specialties.

This celebration provides an opportunity for our community to come together, reflect on the teachings of St. Sava, and enjoy a day filled with spirituality, cultural performances, and delicious food. The Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral invites everyone in the Chicago area to join us in commemorating the life and legacy of St. Sava.
