Royal Visit & Vidovdan Celebration in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL — June 22, 2026 — Yesterday, the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago hosted an extraordinary historic gathering, intertwining the deep spiritual legacy of Vidovdan with a momentous Royal Visit from Their Royal Highnesses, Hereditary Prince Philip and Princess Danica Karađorđević of Serbia. Coinciding beautifully with Father’s Day, the event transformed into a profound manifestation of the “Vidovdan Covenant”—redefining freedom not merely as individual autonomy, but as a community’s sacred choice to sacrifice, remember, and love across generations.

The day commenced with the Holy Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Longin, with His Grace Bishop Serafim and Cathedral Clergy. Attendance was exceptionally great, with hundreds of faithful packing the cathedral nave, creating an atmosphere where emotions ran incredibly high and the collective sense of Serbian identity was palpable.

Following the Liturgy, the festivities moved to the packed Cathedral Social Hall for a formal lunch and cultural program, serving as a powerful catalyst for community building. The banquet uniquely reunited the historic ties between the Royal House of Karađorđević and Chicago—the capital of the Serbian diaspora. For decades, Chicago served as a vital sanctuary for the Serbian spirit, famously providing refuge to Prince Philip’s grandfather, the late King Peter II. By welcoming his grandson, the community closed an emotional, historical circle of mutual devotion. Hereditary Prince Philip addressed the audience with humility, reflecting on the Crown as a living anchor of national continuity.

The Vidovdan cultural program, masterfully steered by Jelena Stojaković and Kiril Anastasov, displayed a stunning intergenerational continuity:

  • National Anthems: The program opened with the American and Serbian national anthems—the latter, “Bože Pravde”, historically sung as the royal anthem of the Kingdom of Serbia, performed by the SSS Branko Radichevich and the Oko Sokolovo Artistic Company.
  • The Royal Seal: The Oko Sokolovo Vocal Ensemble, accompanied by Stefan Filipović on accordion, performed a moving rendition of “Lulo moja, srebrom okovana”, traditionally remembered as the favorite folk song of King Peter I the Liberator.
  • The Tear and the Triumph: The Brankići Children’s Choir brought many to tears with “Suza Kosova”, before the mood shifted to vibrant resilience with the Oko Sokolovo Artistic Company’s fiery, intricate Dances of Kosovsko Pomoravlje.
  • The Matrix of Identity: A joint performance of “Sveta Anastasija Srpska” by both the Senior and Junior Branko Radichevich Choirs beautifully illustrated the passing of the cultural flame from fathers to children.

The afternoon concluded with a powerful, hall-wide performance of “S Kosova”, uniting all performers and guests in a singular voice. As the sounds of the Radović Family Orchestra faded, the image left in the social hall was an icon of the living Church. With the Hierarchs, the Royal Couple, the fathers of the community, and the youngest children gathered together for a historic group photograph, Chicago demonstrated that the Vidovdan Covenant remains a thriving, breathing reality in 2026.
